Cascara Sagrada – is a shrub native to western North America whose bark is processed for medicinal purposes. It has a long history of traditional use where it has been used for centuries to support digestive health and as a herbal laxative. Cascara sagrada is primarily used to treat constipation. The anthraquinones contained in the bark inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes in the intestines. Because of this, stool volume increases as it absorbs the excess water, which increases pressure within the intestine. This stimulates muscle contractions in the colon (peristalsis), speeding the clearance of the bowel, and producing a softer, quicker bowel movement. Casacara Sagrada improves a sluggish colon that is constipated by improving the flow of secretions to the stomach, liver, and pancreas. It is considered to be a stimulant laxative alongside other natural laxatives like aloe vera and senna. Unlike these counterparts, the effect of cascara sagrada is gentler, resulting in fewer loose or watery stools. Cascara Sagrada is not considered to be habit-forming, as it cleanses and restores natural tone to the colon. It is also effective on the gallbladder ducts and helps the body rid itself of gallstones. It also helps to treat various forms of dyspepsia (or indigestion), and can also be used as treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.
Cascara sagrada is used by many who prefer “natural” laxatives to chemical ones. Cascara sagrada is intended for short-term use only. If used to treat occasional constipation, it is generally safe and well-tolerated. It is important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated whilst using Cascara Sagrada.
Blessed Thistle – is a plant native to the Mediterranean and is recognized by its hairy, dandelion-like leaves and fuzzy, yellow blossoms. Blessed thistle has been used since the Middle Ages to treat bubonic plague, promote digestive health and prevent infection. Blessed thistle has been used for more than 2,000 years to support bile secretion, support liver health, circulation, promote hormone balance, and more. Historically, herbalists used blessed thistle as a general stimulant and as a tonic to support the digestive tract. Proper digestion is the foundation of health. Blessed Thistle contains bitter principles called sesquiterpenes which stimulate the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach, and supports the breakdown of fats, supporting and assisting in the assimilation of nutrients.
Bitter herbs such as blessed thistle help stimulate organs into a reflex action, especially in the liver and female reproductive organs. It also has an expectorant effect on the upper respiratory system, which may temporarily ease symptoms related to seasonal health challenges. Blessed Thistle also acts to strengthen the heart and lungs, reduces fever and headaches, strengthens memory, and increases circulation and oxygen to the brain.
Rhubarb Root – has properties that make it a highly effective laxative. Its astringent qualities help to improve bowel tone after it has purged the intestines, making it an excellent agent for improving the tone and health of the digestive tract. Its laxative effects make it a valuable aid in the treatment of chronic constipation, hemorrhoids , and gastroenteritis.
When taken in small doses, it has a tonic effect as a blood builder and blood cleanser. It increases salivary and gastric flow, and cleanses the liver by encouraging bile flow. Rhubarb root supports the colon as a gentle laxative in constipation, and works as an astringent in the case of diarrhea. It is ideal for disorders of the colon, spleen, and liver.
Prodigiosa – is a excellent herb which has an historical use in the Mexican and Native American herbal traditions, for combating high blood glucose levels. It can be one of the greatest of herbal allies and has proven to be extremely beneficial in type 2, insulin-resistant diabetes. Prodigiosa is a bitter herb which is why it is effective for the digestive system. Bitter herbs are important because they promote healthy digestion, powerfully aiding in the detoxification function of the liver, improving kidney function, participating in blood sugar regulation, stimulating immune function, improving nutrient assimilation.
Bitter foods and herbs are rarely ingested by western society due to high consumption of sugar and salt. However, when a bitter substance is recognized by bitter receptors on the tongue, a chain of neural and endocrine events begin, labeled as the “bitter reflex.” The body then releases the gastric hormone gastrin, this reflex results in an overall stimulation of digestive function, which over time strengthens the structure and function of all digestive organs (liver, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, etc.).
Prodigiosa has properties that enable better digestion of fat in the body, and has been proven to improve the synthesis of bile in the liver. It is also used for other ailments such as arthritis, blood purifier, cataracts, and diabetes.
